Alma Gilbert acquires exclusive rights to exhibit one of the most important Maxfield Parrish paintings still in private hands

Circe's Palace

This painting was one of nine which Maxfield Parrish did during the period 1907-1909 to illustrate a reprint of the Nathaniel Hawthorne book called A Wonder Book for Children and Tanglewood Tales. The fairy tale of Greek sorceress Circe, who had the power to turn her enemies into various animals, is one of the Tanglewood Tales stories.

Parrish's wonderful illustrations provided the impetus for Duffield & Company to re-issue this famous book. Circe'e Palace is one of the earliest applications of the famous "Parrish blue" tint, being by far the most colorful of the nine paintings done for the book.

Maxfield Parrish Art for Sale

The Alma Gilbert is a leading broker for the sale of the original works of Maxfield Parrish, including the spectacular 18 foot long mural the "North Wall Panel" from the former home of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in Old Westbury, Long Island.

Alma Gilbert has been appointed exclusive world-wide broker for the sale of one of Maxfield Parrish's most unique paintings from the House of Art illustration era.

The image below is of the 1928 painting originally called "Dreaming", which depicted a lone woman sitting on a rocky outcrop to the right of the huge tree visible in this image.

This painting was the final one done for the Reinthal-Newman Publishing's House of Art subsidiary. It marked the final effort by Maxfield Parrish to recapture the romanticism the took the country by storm with the 1923 "magnum-opus" painting "Daybreak". In the correspondence on file with Reinthal-Newman leading up to this painting, Parrish revealed an intense painter's "creative block" as he struggled to finalize the size and placement of the lone woman's figure.

Dreaming/Oct

Maxfield Parrish "Dreaming/October", 1928, Oil on board, 50" x 32"

The House of Art prints of "Dreaming" failed quite noticably to capture the public's imagination, and this lead to the final break up between Parrish and Reinthal-Newman. At some point later in his career, Parrish decided to see what else he could make of the original, and painted over the image of the lone woman. He started the outline of a huge new tree with a blue background layer, thus demonstrating his well-known painting style. The painting in its unfinished state was tentatively given the new name "October", hence the dual title by which it is now referred to.
